Related to the tomato and pepper, the egg plant is named after the long egg shaped fruit, or the unique purplish colour of the fruit.; Egg plant will absorb the flavour of whatever it is cooked with making it ideal for inclusion into many dishes. Historically in many parts of South Africa the Egg Plant was considered a good substitute for meat.
