Asparagus
Asparagus (Asparagus officinalis) is a hardy perennial native to Western Europe. This perennial can remain viable for 10-20 years, so choose your garden site carefully. Asparagus needs a fertile, well-draining soil. There’s no trick to growing asparagus from seeds, just be patient soil temperatures for seed germination should be between 21-29 C. Soak the seeds for a couple of hours, then plant each seed 2.5cm deep, sprouting should take between 2-8 weeks from planting seeds. Seedlings are ready to transplant when they are 10-12 weeks old. Space the transplants 45cm apart in rows set 6cm inches apart. For thinner spears or thicker spears adjust spacing and planting depth slightly. Consider planting your new asparagus near tomatoes as asparagus repels nematodes that attack tomato plants while tomatoes repel asparagus beetles. A very symbiotic relationship indeed. As the plant grows, cover the crown with soil and keep it moist (2.5 cm of water per week). Fertilize in the spring with 1-2 cups of complete organic fertilizer. Balm
The leaves have a mild lemon scent similar to mint. During summer, small white flowers full of nectar appear that attract bees, hence the genus Melissa (Greek for “honey bee”).
Basil
Basil is possibly native to India and has been cultivated there for more than 5,000 years, although it is more associated with Italian and Mediterranean cooking. Very easy to grow both in containers and gardens. Basil is available in various scents and plant sizes and leaf colours. harvest regularly and pinch tops to create bushy shrubs.
Borage
An easy growing annual herb plant with vivid star shaped blue flowers that start pink. The leaves and flowers have the flavour and scent of cucumbers. Grows best in full sun and when sown directly into the garden.
Capsicum
Capsicum is a long crop so start sowing in early spring. We have divided our Capsicum in Chilli- or hot varieties and Sweet Peppers, perfect for salads and stir-fries. All Chillies are great as container plants and add a decorative touch to patios and small gardens
Catnip
This perennial thrives in poor soil that is well-drained. Pinch off the top of the plant when flowers start to form to prevent seeds forming.
Celery
Celery has been cultivated as a vegetable since antiquity. Celery has a long fibrous stalk tapering into leaves. Stalks AND leaves are eaten and used in cooking. Freshly harvested seeds can also be used as a spice.
Chamomile
Small flowered herb with sweetly scented daisy like flowers. Flowers are used fresh or dried to make teas.
Chervil
Chives
Slim leaves, forming neat clumps, with a mild onion flavour. Mostly used fresh in salads. Can be grown in containers or as a neat edging in gardens.
Coriander
Clusters of soft mauve flowers, delicious leaves and edible seeds make this garden must have. Best in early spring and early summer and again in autumn. Very fast growing.
Dill
Easy to grow and in the same family as parsley. Mention of Dill can be found in ancient Egyptian scripts. Dill has a mild liquorice type flavour. Dill leaves and seeds are used in a wide variety of dishes, traditionally Dill seed is used for pickling while the leaves can be used for pickling but are also a refreshing addition to salads.

In early summer the flowers open only at dusk. The bright yellow, fragrant flowers are mostly fertilised by twilight-flying insects, especially in the early season. Later in the season the flowers open all day but do not have a scent until the evening.
Fennel
Garden Cress
A fast-growing, edible herb, with a peppery, tangy flavour and aroma. In some regions, garden cress is known as mustard and cress, garden pepper cress, pepperwort, pepper grass, or poor man’s pepper. Ideal for containers.
Lavender
A strongly aromatic shrub growing as high as 1 to 2 metres. The leaves are evergreen. The flowers are pinkish-purple (lavender-coloured), produced on spikes at the top of slender, leafless stems. L. angustifolia is the easiest of all the lavender species to grow, and is often used in herb and rose gardens.
Origanum
Related to sweet marjoram, Oreganum has small purple flowers and olive green leaves.

A relative of broccoli and cauliflower the seeds as well as leaves of the plant are used. Plants can grow tall and thrive under cooler conditions.Do not plant close to basil, beans (pole), tomato.

Pepper
There is no secret to growing paprika peppers. They are grown much like other peppers, which means a well-draining, fertile soil in a sunny area. Fruit is mature when it is bright red in color. Dry your peppers in mesh bags hung in full sun for three days to one week. When completely dry, 85 percent of the pod weight will have been lost.
Pet Grass
Rocket
Originating in mediterranean regions rocket is stil used widely in cooking and salads. Makes a great companion for Beans, Dill, Lettuce, Mint, Nasturtium and Thyme. A very easy crop to grow. As weather gets hotter flavour strengthens. Sow direct into garden or container.
Sage
A small shrubby type of plant with greyish velvety leaves. Plant in full sun. Sage can also be used as an ornamental shrub and is a waterwise plant.
